Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
