Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
