Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
